In 2024, the Shepparton Festival proudly presented An Item of Connection, a poignant series of portraits by Cam Matheson that captures the profound experiences and emotions felt by members of the Greater Shepparton community during the 2022 Central Victorian Floods. This series represents just a few of the countless personal stories that were shaped by the disaster.
Each subject was invited to bring an object of personal significance to be photographed with, offering a visual symbol of connection and resilience. Along with the portrait, they participated in a brief interview, sharing their reflections on the floods and their recovery.
This exhibition serves as both a historical record and a platform for conversation—shining a light on the stories often overlooked in regional communities. It also provides an important opportunity for recognition, validation, and healing, essential components in the process of disaster recovery.
An Item of Connection will continue its journey during the 2025 Shepparton Festival, touring through smaller towns and bringing these intimate stories to more communities.
